Orion Comes to Elrond: Liquidity as a Core Necessity for an Era of Internet-Scale Money

Blockchain sits at the bleeding edge of innovation. Rapid innovation cycles breed new product categories, which quickly capture the imagination of participants, only to immediately make room for the next one.

Centralized exchanges(CEX) have made a significant contribution in providing liquidity to startups at a much earlier stage than traditional IPOs do. With this new global liquidity pool, a rapidly growing market for open source technology and decentralized applications has been gaining ground.

Decentralized exchanges(DEX) have been the second major wave amplifying this trend, with automatic market-making engines providing an even more efficient mechanism for liquidity provision. Viewed in this light, yield farming, when applied correctly, becomes an effective way to bootstrap liquidity, community, and attention for any project.

The important question becomes: how do we aggregate all liquidity laying scattered across various centralized and decentralized exchanges?

Enter Orion: liquidity aggregation at global scale

Based on the specific opportunities they see, institutional and retail actors interact with different exchanges in search of deep liquidity, rich pairs, tight spreads, low fees, and fast execution.

With a deep understanding of this need, Orion Protocol creates a unique value layer connecting liquidity streams across centralized and decentralized exchanges in a seamless and automated way. By incentivizing a network of brokers, they effectively open an infinite bridge across many islands of liquidity located on disparate systems, enabling free flow between actors, platforms, and blockchains in a surprisingly simplified manner.

With this new meta liquidity bridge in place, a massive opportunity for projects, builders, and investors is about to open.

It’s time to build, on Elrond

At Elrond we have delivered perhaps the most scalable blockchain architecture in the world, delivering above 15,000 TPS, and able to scale to hundreds of thousands with the demand. Our dev tooling is ready, and we are preparing to activate key features capable of ushering in a hyper-growth period.

At the core of all this is the fundamental belief that in its most efficient form money should be digital: native to the internet, borderless, near-instant, inexpensive to move, and universally accessible. DeFi is itself a simplified expression of this idea, implying that all financial instruments will gradually become digital, being rebuilt on a natively decentralized blockchain that can work at internet scale.

Thus, Elrond lays the foundation for a new solution space within the internet ecosystem, in which the barriers to what’s possible are no longer performance bound. We are ready to announce that Orion will be a key Elrond pillar on the liquidity side. With Orion Protocol, the obstacles separating available liquidity are practically removed, giving way to a meta liquidity pool with novel opportunities.

The first priority and major milestone of Orion will be the launch of its mainnet on the 15th of December 2020, while the second, arguably even more important, will be its launch on the Elrond network tentatively targeted for Q1 2021.

Internet scale performance with internet scale liquidity

The next generation automated market-making protocol will likely span multiple blockchains, or even better, multiple blockchains and multiple centralized exchanges at the same time.

The next generation lending, borrowing, or derivative protocols will likely use new types of collateralized baskets from multiple blockchains that were simply unavailable previously.

The next generation yield farming product will likely include DeFi primitives deployed on multiple blockchains, getting the best available yield on any platform, not just one.

Will all of these be built by Orion or will they be built on top of Orion? There are many design possibilities for these next generation of products, but two things are clear: (1) they will all operate at near-instant internet speeds, with global and inexpensive transfers, and smart contracts that will yield 30% of the fees to the contract authors, and (2) will all want to leverage high global liquidity connecting a plurality of platforms at the same time.

Elrond is ready to offer internet scale performance, and Orion will soon be ready to leverage Elrond, and open these new liquidity streams to the world. The time to join the Elrond ecosystem, and take a close look at Orion is now.
